Bugs Bunny: Fresh Hare

Merrie Melodies presents... Fresh Hare, a classic Bugs Bunny cartoon from Warner Brothers -- with Elmer Fudd, as always, on the hunt for Bugs, who is the target for being a skwewy wabbit.

This version inclues the censored ending, which shows insensitve the creators were to race issues at the time and is a good indicator of the acceptable type of racism from that period in American media and society.

We believe it's important to show what was in the original episode in order to document the true history of American media at that time.

In this retelling of the Cinderella story, Betty is the title character, a poor young woman forced to be the virtual slave of her two ugly stepsisters.

The Early Bird Gets the Worm (1940)

Directed by Tex Avery and starring Mel Blanc, The Early Bird Gets the Worm is a controversial cartoon that tells the story of a mama bird who tells her chicks the classic bedtime story about the early bird getting the worm. She's also warns them about the fox - who is waiting for the early bird for breakfast.

The controversy stems from the racial depictions which are distasteful to anyone watching from a modern perspective but were commonplace in the late '30s early '40s when this cartoon was created.

It's important to show animation from this time for what it was with all of its flaws and ugliness than to erase it from its cultural history.

Gabby – All’s Well (1941)

Gabby wanders upon a baby carriage that seems abandoned other than the very cranky baby that needs diapering.

It doesn't take long before Gabby -- whose character throughout the cartoon series claims to be an expert in things he has no knowledge of -- is outwitted by the baby. Milk and diaper hijinks galore.

Directed by David Fleischer. Animation by David Tendlar and William Nolan. Music by Sammy Timberg. Produced in 1941.

Gabby originally appeared in David Fleischer’s animated feature Gulliver’s Travels from 1939. Gabby was the town crier and sang “All’s Well”. That refrain stuck and was the theme for this episode.
